Want to know how to type those characters and many more? These are alt key codes and symbols. Some people call them alt symbols. Some call them alt codes. Some people call them special characters. So how do you make them? Here's a short explantion:

Hold the Alt key and hit 3-4 numbers on your number pad (make sure numlock is on). You end up with a weird symbol.

The problem here is that you do not know what symbols there are and what their code is (unless you memorized every darn symbol...). Problem solved. A very nice list can be found at The World of Stuff (updated to archived page on Wayback Machine since the original site is no longer up).

If you search on Google or Yahoo, you'll find a lot of lists, but the last time I checked, none of the top ranked ones were nearly as complete the above list.

While all of the alt-codes in the list are correct, the list itself is far from complete.  The alt-codes list extends all the way to 55203 (í?£), albeit with many runs of blanks.  I am currently working towards a complete file that archives all of the currently existing symbols as well as the corresponding number.  So far, I have reached number 1546 and will continue with the effort in my spare time.  While it is true that not all of the characters have a practical function unique to that symbol which one is even remotely likely to require at any point in their life span, I feel that it is for the best that all of the alt-codes be recorded in the event that the use of an outlying symbol is necessitated.  My second reason is that I am curious as to how many alt-codes exist as of now and what they are, and I am sure that I am not alone in this regard.  Your "complete" list of alt-codes barely scratches the surface of the truly mind-boggling number of hidden characters that have been programmed into the world's most common computer program.  Sincerely, Ozzie.
