TuneCore Falsely Advertises Royalties

December 15th, 2022 | Posted by pftq in Blabberbox | #
Didn't plan to post this, but it really irked me. @TuneCore advertises 100% royalties but in actuality takes a 20% cut on anything YouTube, even when others (ie @Distrokid) only take from Content-ID. This means YouTube Music as well, which is supposed to be YouTube's answer to Spotify.

YouTube Music Algo Updated?

December 15th, 2022 | Posted by pftq in Blabberbox | #
Looks like something changed w/ the algo recently. Topic videos seemed to get a sudden jump in suggested views. This is good because @YouTubeMusic pays almost 2x Spotify does (unless you're @WaterflameMusic on @Tunecore, which takes a 20% cut for YT).

For Autodidactic, it was extremely noticeable since the channel is smaller and its topic videos generally had zero view count before a sudden jump:

But even Waterflame noticed it because his top 10 videos suddenly included a YT-Music topic video that was never there before.

Auto-CC with Gmail Google Workspace

December 13th, 2022 | Posted by pftq in 42 | #
For shared emails that can be sent by multiple people (in a company, team, etc), you can have any sent emails automatically CC the team by adding the below routing settings.  Basically what this does is so anyone sending from team-email@company-email.com will automatically CC team-email@company-email.com as well.  This is especially useful if you also allow users to send from a shared email address from their own personal Gmail account (such as from a shared Google Group email), which makes it harder to be accountable without the Auto-CC.

1) Go to Google Admin > Apps > Google Workspace > Gmail
2) Click Routing.
3) Click Add Another Rule under Routing.
4) Use the...[More]

Capture Card Latency in OBS

December 10th, 2022 | Posted by pftq in 42 | #
Almost bought a new capture card / second screen to avoid latency issues, but it turns out the solution was in OBS by 1) using capture only on the Properties > Audio Output Mode and then 2) Monitor + Output on Advanced Audio Properties.  For some reason, having Properties > Audio Output Mode set to Desktop introduces a 100+ ms delay.  Would've expected it to be the same as Monitor + Output.  If you're hearing an echo or need to also record sound from Desktop, you'll want to use Monitor Only (mute output) so it doesn't also record the capture card from desktop audio.

Google Bot Mobile Test Ignores Javascript

November 26th, 2022 | Posted by pftq in Blabberbox | #
Spent the last few hours trying to figure out what Google Bot was complaining about in Webmaster Tools mobile test only to realize the bot takes a snapshot of your webpage sometimes without letting any javascript load first.  Solution then is to have the page by default suitable for mobile first and adjust backwards for desktop users.  Lot of lost time adjusting things that ended up not having no effect on Google's snapshot of the page, so hopefully this note helps someone save time later (or myself if I forget).

Compiling GooEngine Blender for Windows

November 12th, 2022 | Posted by pftq in Blabberbox | #
Just my own notes for building/compiling @dillongoo's GooEngine version of Blender for Windows, as it's not super straight forward and instructions are kind of scattered all over.  This is for version 3.3 of GooEngine (the latest at the time of this post).

1. Install Git for Windows (note, it's not the same as Github Desktop, which won't work!).  Make sure to check add Git to PATH option during install.
2. Install Visual Studio Community 2019 (2022 not yet compatible with GooEngine 3.3 based on this post).  Make sure to check the C++ desktop option.  I also checked C++ for Unreal just in case and because I use Unreal regularly for gamedev.
3. Install Subversion.
4. Install...[More]

Artificial Imaginary

November 6th, 2022 | Posted by pftq in Stories | #
"Imaginary friends made real through AI."

A new AI tech company sells robots for those wanting their imaginary friends made real.  The tech breaks all limits for how human and intelligent it is with no other tech coming close, and no one can understand how it came to be.  All this comes to a halt when one user ends up dead in the most gruesome circumstance.

The scene starts with an android child befriending a human kid until it turns sociopathic and murders the family.  The android ends up missing and continuing to kill in new murder cases across the city.

The tech firm...[More]

GS65 Laptop Speakers Blowing Out Fix

August 25th, 2022 | Posted by pftq in Blabberbox | #
The speakers on my MSI GS65 Laptop suddenly started being extremely loud and blown out after a Windows update.  Nothing fixed it (drivers reset, etc) until I flipped the laptop over and pushed the BIOS reset pinhole with a needle.  Was so close to having to send the laptop in for repair.  Curses Windows Updates! (the one time I forget to disable it on a computer)

Loudness Penalty Tricks

July 27th, 2022 | Posted by pftq in 42 | #
More for my own notes for reducing loudness penalty of music but some of these took forever to figure out - maybe helps some others out as well.
- Loudness penalty is based on the average loudness of the track.  So yes, having quiet parts reduces your average and boosts the overall loudness.  However, things that are too quiet (like actual silence) are automatically ignored and not counted toward the average.
- Stereo widening instantly worsens your loudness penalty even if it's perceptively the same volume.  Conversely stereo merging instantly improves your loudness by 1-2db.  This one took me so long to realize - I was EQing a track to death only to realize it was because of how far left and right I had things panned.  Similarly drums tend to be stereo merged in the lower frequencies for commercially produced tracks, and this is probably why.  Vocals and lead synths/instruments tend to be entirely mono to begin with, which probably is this same thing.

Useful trick that saved me hours of render, but if an application is stuck minimized and won't come back up, hover your mouse over it on the taskbar and right-click the preview to restore.

White Mask

February 24th, 2022 | Posted by pftq in Stories | #
A man is working late in a museum with a white mask propped up on a table.  He notices the mask has very human-looking eyes, and when he gets closer to look, they suddenly move to look at him.  He quickly realizes this is a person wearing the mask behind the table, but when he shoves the table away, there is no one there, just the mask floating and staring back at him.  It starts to move, and when it turns, it goes invisible as if there is no back side to the face.

Another one that was a dream for me.
